How a devastating quake killed thousands in Turkey, Syria
Two earthquakes measuring 7.8 and 7.5 were followed by aftershocks in frigid winter weather. The impact could be felt as far away as Lebanon, Jordan, Israel and Egypt. The grim death toll is a result of several factors: the sheer size of the quake and the fact that it struck relatively close to the surface.
