House Republicans narrowly block effort to end Trump’s war with Iran

Three Republicans backed the measure, but the tie vote still blocked Democrats’ push to require congressional approval for continued hostilities.

  • On Thursday, the House failed to pass the War Powers Resolution in a 212-212 tie vote, with Democratic Rep. Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey sponsoring the measure.
  • During Wednesday debate, Gottheimer argued the Iran war violates the Constitution, citing Congress's lack of briefing on war objectives. The Senate rejected an identical measure Wednesday, marking its seventh vote on the matter.
  • Pentagon officials testified this week the war has cost $29 billion, while Human Rights Activists in Iran, based in Fairfax, Virginia, estimated at least 1,701 civilian deaths and 13 military deaths since Feb. 28.
  • Crossover voting occurred despite party lines; Pennsylvania Democrat Sen. John Fetterman joined Republicans, and three Republicans including Thomas Massie of Kentucky voted in favor of the resolution.
  • Republican Rep. Brian Mast of Florida, chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, argued that Iran was an imminent threat, defending the military engagement on the House floor.
