Ship traffic through Strait of Hormuz highest since start of war: Monitor
Kpler said AIS-visible crossings reached 36 as more tankers resumed broadcasting their routes after a U.S.-Iran memorandum eased tensions.
- On Monday, at least 36 commodity carriers transited the Strait of Hormuz, marking a record level since the Middle East war began in late February, according to maritime tracking firm Kpler.
- Washington and Tehran reached a memorandum of understanding last week to end the conflict, easing constraints that previously limited daily crossings to fewer than 10 vessels.
- These 36 passages represent one-third of normal peacetime traffic, which typically sees 120 vessels daily. The VLCC Universal Glory entered the strait Tuesday, hauling 2 million barrels of Saudi crude.
- Strengthening confidence among shipowners reflects Iran's expected restraint from targeting vessels, said Muyu Xu, senior crude oil analyst at Kpler Ltd, though safe passage remains uncertain.
- Iran's chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said "The Strait of Hormuz will never return to its pre-war conditions," as some vessels continue disabling tracking signals, indicating operational risks persist.
