HKEX Launches 5-Year China Government Bond Futures
The cash-settled contract gives offshore investors a new tool to hedge interest-rate risk and expands Hong Kong’s yuan product suite.
- On Monday, August 3, 2026, Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited launched its Five-Year China Government Bond Futures contract, the only offshore contract of its kind, at HKEX Connect Hall.
- Beijing continues efforts to internationalize the yuan, pushing to deepen market connectivity between the Chinese Mainland and Hong Kong following an April decision allowing qualified foreign investors to trade onshore treasury bond futures.
- Supported by 13 liquidity providers from banks and securities firms, the contract features a size of RMB500,000 and is cash-settled, with a 50 per cent trading fee discount available until July 30, 2027.
- "A vibrant FIC market is critical to Hong Kong's future growth," said HKEX Chairman Carlson Tong, noting the instrument complements Bond Connect and Swap Connect programs.
- HKEX Chief Executive Officer Bonnie Y Chan identified the launch as a key milestone in developing a diversified, multi-asset marketplace, planning to work with regulators to broaden product choice and strengthen risk-management capabilities.
