Man Charged for Allegedly Violently Assaulting 5 Women on UCLA Campus Within an Hour
Prosecutors say Olumuyiwa Akindahunsi attacked five women in under an hour, and officers later found zip ties, duct tape and paracord on him.
Olumuyiwa Akindahunsi, 29, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges involving the assault of five women at the University of California Los Angeles last Thursday during an hour-long spree at campus residential facilities.
The crime spree began at 11:35 p.m. last Thursday when Akindahunsi allegedly stole a student's cellphone on Bruin Walk, then entered De Neve Evergreen, Dykstra Hall, and Cedar Hall to assault multiple female victims.
Officers arrested Akindahunsi near Parking Structure 8 after a witness intervened at Cedar Hall and pursued the fleeing suspect. Authorities recovered zip ties, duct tape, and paracord in his possession.
If convicted, Akindahunsi faces 32 years to life in state prison and lifelong sex offender registration. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman stated the attacks "strike at the core of campus safety."
UCLA Police increased patrols in residential areas and urged students to utilize the Community Service Officer Evening Escort Program, which provides free walking escorts from dusk until 1 a.m. Akindahunsi remains in custody without bail pending a preliminary hearing.
