Hold the phone: dedication to historic site in Lake Cowichan Oct. 23
The plaque honors the building’s role as a telephone exchange, library branch and food bank, officials said.
On Friday, October 23, the Town of Lake Cowichan will host a dedication ceremony for the Mildred Child Annex site at 11 a.m., now serving as a municipal parking area.
Named after former librarian and mayor Mildred Child, the building served as council chambers and staff quarters following 1989 renovations after the town purchased it in 1986.
Local telephone service began in 1915, with exchanges moving between private homes and Scholey's Store; by 1932, Miss Louise Marbouef became the full-time operator before automatic dialing arrived in 1962.
Austin consulted with the Kaatza Museum to create a commemorative plaque installed by the Public Works Department on bricks from the original building; three or four former telephone operators plan to attend.
The dedication ceremony honors those who kept the community connected, with Austin noting, "I am pleased to acknowledge the history of the building and what the telephone and those early operators meant to our small community.
