Northern B.C. Man Fined $7.5K for Possession of Endangered Species
Metlakatla Fishery Guardians alerted federal officers, who found Caylin James Holland with 10 northern abalone, a protected species listed as endangered.
Caylin James Holland was fined $7,500 in Prince Rupert Provincial Court on August 5, 2026, after being convicted of illegally possessing 10 endangered northern abalone.
The Metlakatla Fishery Guardians alerted Fisheries and Oceans Canada on September 8, 2025, after suspecting harvesters fishing near Metlakatla, five kilometres north of Prince Rupert, had caught the protected species.
Northern abalone are listed as endangered under Canada's Species at Risk Act, with populations declining sharply before a 1990 fishery closure; the seized mollusks were returned alive to suitable habitat.
This investigation highlights the role Indigenous Fishery Guardians play in monitoring local waters and supporting conservation efforts alongside federal officers, according to DFO.
Illegal harvesting continues to threaten the species' recovery, and DFO encourages reporting suspected violations to its Pacific Region reporting line at 1-800-465-4336.
