Pooch on the Loose: Victoria Airport Overnight Search Ends in a Paw-Fect Rescue - Kimberley Bulletin
Airport staff, security and firefighters mobilized after a 25-pound labradoodle slipped free, and they found her in a crate after an overnight search.
A Hollywood-esque search-and-rescue mission unfolded at Victoria International Airport after a 25-pound Labradoodle named Cayenne escaped during an overnight operation. Owner Elizabeth Cage recounted the successful recovery of her dog following the intensive airfield search.
On October 24, Cayenne slipped her collar after a loud noise spooked her during a scheduled transfer to Toronto. The dog vanished into darkness while Cage's friend frantically searched the parking lot before his flight departure.
Stephen Collins, YYJ's manager of the integrated operations centre, mobilized security and airfield fire teams to locate the dog. "We had security involved, and then we had our airfield fire involved," Collins said of the coordinated response.
At 6:40 a.m. the following morning, airport staff spotted Cayenne along the fence line. After a brief pursuit, firefighters captured the dog near the firehall and wrapped her in a warm blanket, concluding the rescue.
Days after the ordeal, Cayenne is back home in Duncan living her best life. "My biggest fear was, is she going to be devastated or traumatized," Cage said, but the dog recovered fully with no lasting trauma.
