IBM to Acquire HRL Laboratories to Power the Future of Quantum
The deal adds electron spin qubits to IBM’s portfolio, as the company says the two approaches can be built with the same chip equipment.
On Thursday, IBM announced an agreement to acquire HRL Laboratories, a research lab jointly owned by Boeing and General Motors, adding a second quantum computing approach to its portfolio.
Jay Gambetta, director of IBM Research, identified "a parallel path" of spin-based quantum technology as crucial, noting HRL provides "advanced expertise in silicon-spin qubit engineering" to strengthen IBM's quantum mission.
HRL's team will begin manufacturing chips at IBM's New York facility, shifting from their current California location, while Boeing and General Motors "will continue to partner with IBM" on quantum technologies.
Beyond its quantum computing focus, HRL brings expertise in quantum sensors and materials science that IBM expects will optimize performance; Rob Vasquez, HRL's Chief Executive Officer, said "Joining IBM is the natural next chapter."
Projected to close by the end of the third quarter of 2026, the acquisition supports IBM's broader investment strategy, including plans to spend more than $10bn on quantum computing over the next five years.
The International Business Machines (IBM) has informed that it has agreed to acquire HRL Laboratories, a private quantum research laboratory jointly owned by General Motors and Boeing, as the company seeks to accelerate its vision in quantum computing.
