Historic Locomotive Begins Coast-to-Coast Tour. Here Are All the Stops.
Union Pacific said the 1.2 million-pound locomotive will make more than 50 whistle-stops and eight major display events.
On Memorial Day, May 25, 2026, Union Pacific Railroad's Big Boy steam locomotive launches a coast-to-coast summer tour celebrating America's 250th anniversary, marking the first time the historic machine travels to the East Coast.
Built in the 1940s to conquer the Wasatch Mountain Range, the 1.2 million-pound Big Boy is the world's only functioning steam locomotive of its kind; Union Pacific retired these massive engines in 1961.
Union Pacific planned major display events and more than 50 whistle-stops across 10 states. The route includes first-time visits to Indiana, Ohio, New York, and Pennsylvania, with whistle-stops generally lasting 15- to 30- minutes for rail fans.
The nonprofit Union Pacific Museum will sell tickets for fundraising rides in vintage passenger cars pulled by Big Boy through the Poconos Mountains in Pennsylvania on June 14. These rides support preservation of the historic equipment.
After completing the coast-to-coast journey, the locomotive will return to its homebase in Cheyenne, Wyo., on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, concluding the summer tour. This marks the end of the historic machine's anniversary celebration.
