HHS Cuts Funding for American Academy of Pediatrics' Programs
The canceled grants funded programs addressing infant mortality, rural healthcare, mental health, and autism; AAP represents 67,000 pediatricians nationwide, warns of potential harm to children.
- FRIDAY, Dec. 19, 2025 — The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services canceled seven federal grants that supported American Academy of Pediatrics child-health programs, the AAP confirmed this week.
- HHS spokesperson Andrew Nixon told CNN the grants were cut because they "no longer align with the Department's mission or priorities" as the department shifts focus under Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
- The canceled grants supported programs on several child-health priorities, including sudden infant death and rural access, while the American Academy of Pediatrics represents about 67,000 pediatricians nationwide.
- The AAP said the funding loss will directly affect children and families, warning the sudden withdrawal will impact infants, children, youth and their families across the United States and is weighing legal recourse.
- Earlier this year the AAP broke with CDC COVID-19 vaccine guidance and on Wednesday appeared in federal court in Massachusetts arguing recent vaccine policy changes violated federal law.
