Here's what's open, closed for Memorial Day 2026
Memorial Day will be observed on Monday, May 25, 2026, serving as one of 11 federal U.S. holidays that entitle most federal workers to paid time off.
Originally called Decoration Day, the holiday honors military members who died while serving in the U.S. armed forces, with the late-May timing chosen because flowers bloom widely across the country.
Government offices, banks, and schools will close on Monday, while the U.S. Postal Service will not deliver mail; bank ATMs remain accessible and limited digital banking services continue.
Most major retailers will welcome shoppers with potentially modified hours, yet financial markets including the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will remain closed for the day.
Communities will mark the "unofficial start to summer" with parades and ceremonies, including the annual Memorial Day Flag Garden where more than 37,000 flags will be planted at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Boston Common.
