Here’s how Taylor Sheridan met his ex-con co-author of ‘How to Not Die in Prison’
Sheridan and his co-author built the book from prison survival advice and personal experience, with the project framed as a guide to navigating incarceration.
Filmmaker Taylor Sheridan met his collaborator, Nelson, at a Los Angeles gym and decided to produce a book about prison life after learning of Nelson's incarceration history.
Following his release from prison after 20 years, Nelson struggled to secure employment, prompting Sheridan, creator of "Yellowstone," to recognize his unique experience and offer assistance.
The pair became friends, and Sheridan flew Nelson to Texas to begin their partnership, purchasing several travel guides for research and successfully drafting three chapters together.
A production assistant role Sheridan attempted to secure for Nelson proved unsuitable; the pay and hours conflicted with Nelson's responsibilities as a single father with a 5-year-old child.
The book, described as a travel guide to prison, landed a deal with Simon & Schuster, positioning the collaboration as Nelson's new writing career following his incarceration.
