Yellowstone Tourist Tossed 8 Feet by Giant Bison After Stopping to Take Photo
The National Park Service said bison have injured more people at Yellowstone than any other animal and urges visitors to stay 25 yards away.
- On Friday, Carl McDaniel, 65, was thrown 8 feet into the air by a bull bison in Yellowstone National Park, suffering a broken femur in four places near his hip.
- The National Park Service advises visitors to stay at least 25 yards away from bison, as the animals are unpredictable, can run three times faster than humans, and will defend their space when threatened.
- Professional photographer Mike Macleod filmed the incident and described the bison as "angry, agitated and charging anything and everything," then ran at the animal to distract it from McDaniel.
- Following surgery on Sunday, McDaniel posted on Facebook early Monday that he is doing "OK" and will undergo physical therapy for the next few days to regain his ability to walk.
- This incident marks the second bison attack in two weeks, following a June 26 incident near Mud Volcano where a 12-year-old was injured by a bison.
