Hegseth praises Asian allies for ‘burden-sharing,’ calls out China’s role in the region
Hegseth said the United States wants stronger allies in Asia-Pacific and warned China not to upset the regional balance.
On May 5, Hegseth announced a strategy to sustain equilibrium in the Asia-Pacific region, emphasizing that Washington seeks a durable balance of power where no state can impose hegemony.
Hegseth praised the Philippines, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore for increasing defense contributions, while Vietnam and India received recognition for improving military readiness to share regional burdens.
Washington will take a "strong, quiet, clear" approach to partnerships, Hegseth said, and alliances should function "without the drama and the moralizing" that has characterized previous efforts.
While Hegseth described the relationship with China as strong, he directly warned the nation against disrupting the regional status quo and threatening allied security.
At the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on Saturday, Hegseth criticized allies in Europe for failing to contribute sufficiently, highlighting broader expectations for defense burden-sharing across all alliances.
