Heavy snowstorm to hit Toronto, Eastern Canada as frigid temperatures persist

Heavy snow of 20 to 40 cm and strong winds will disrupt travel and cause flight cancellations, Environment Canada said with warnings issued across the Greater Toronto Area.

  • On Jan. 25, 2026, GTA municipalities are preparing for Sunday’s storm with Brampton deploying over 360 snow-removal vehicles, Vaughan staging more than 230 equipment pieces, and the City of Toronto pre-salting TTC routes.
  • Environment Canada upgraded the alert from Yellow to Orange, forecasting 20 to 40 centimetres of snow with lake-effect bands off Lake Ontario boosting totals and gusts up to 50 km/h.
  • Plowing and salting plans call for City plow crews to start after five centimetres accumulate, salting main roads within four hours and residential roads within 12 hours, with brine sprayed to prevent black ice.
  • As of Sunday morning, Toronto Pearson International Airport had 57 per cent of departures and 60 per cent of arrivals cancelled, while the Toronto Transit Commission cancelled a planned subway closure and urged passengers to check flight statuses and avoid non-essential travel.
  • If accumulations reach 25 centimetres, city emergency plans will activate, school boards may close Monday with exams moved to Thursday, and officials warn of a messy Monday commute.
