Heat warning issued for Toronto and parts of the GTA
City officials opened cooling spaces and added shelter capacity as temperatures are expected to reach 30 C with a humidex near 36 C.
Environment and Climate Change Canada issued Toronto's first heat warning of the season on Monday, May 18, 2026, with daytime highs expected to reach 30 C and feel closer to 36 C with humidity through Tuesday night.
A warm air mass moving north from the United States is blanketing the region with temperatures about 10 degrees above normal. Meteorologist Kristina Kretchman says the sudden shift may feel "dramatic" due to recent below-normal spring warmth.
The City of Toronto activated its heat relief strategy Monday, opening 168 splash pads and 112 additional shelter spaces, with cooling centers available at civic centers and Metro Hall to help residents escape the heat.
Environment Canada warns that "extreme heat can affect everyone's health" and advises residents to limit direct sun exposure, stay hydrated, and check on older adults and others at risk throughout the event.
Temperatures are expected to drop to 16 C on Wednesday, ending the hot spell, though overnight lows during the warning will provide little respite, floating between 18 and 20 C.
