Family ‘heartbroken’ after B.C. mother and baby killed by falling tree
CUMBERLAND, BRITISH COLUMBIA, AUG 7 – A community gathering will honor Lynae and her infant son Elias, who died after a falling tree struck them at a Vancouver Island campground, with no criminality suspected, police said.
- Last week, a tree fell at Cumberland Lake Park Campground just before 1:45 p.m., striking Lynae and her five-month-old son Elias, RCMP said.
- Officials said the tree was believed dead, measured between 25 and 40 cm in diameter, and had been growing about 20 metres into the woods, according to Cumberland Deputy Fire Chief Stephane Dionne.
- Emergency crews rushed to the lake, and bystanders including an off-duty paramedic immediately began CPR.
- The Comox Valley RCMP said there is no indication of criminality, and the family thanked emergency responders and beachgoers who tried to save Lynae and Elias.
- The family invites the community to Comox Marina Park on Sunday to honor Lynae and Elias, thanking everyone for their support.
