Dad Died 'Trying to Rescue His Children' in Double Seaton Carew Sea Tragedy
Two men drowned after entering rough water to save children, while emergency crews and lifeboats mounted a major rescue operation.
On Sunday, a father and a dogwalker died at Seaton Carew beach in Hartlepool after attempting to rescue children caught in rough seas.
Davey Short, a 48-year-old from Bishop Auckland, rushed into the sea to save one of the children but could not reach the two men who drowned.
The incident, described as a "major operation," involved Cleveland Police and RNLI lifeboats responding after the father entered the water when his children were caught in a "riptide."
Temporary Chief Superintendent of Cleveland Police Helen Wilson confirmed officers are conducting inquiries for the Coroner, with the deaths not being treated as suspicious.
Local former lifeguard Gareth Parker warned that people underestimate under-current strength, while officials urge the public to "take extra care" in open water.
