The Andean hantavirus—which caused the deaths of three passengers on the MV Hondius—is a "New World" strain. In Europe, so-called "Old World" strains of the virus circulate, transmitted directly by rodents. The number of cases recorded each year remains low, and the mortality rate, if infected, is much lower.
