Dangerous bacteria found in tests of 11K vials of seized peptides: Health Canada
Health Canada said the contaminated vials could cause serious infections and ordered the Chinese wholesaler to stop sales as two websites were shut down.
Health Canada seized more than 11,000 vials of unauthorized peptides and shut down two online retailers, truenorthbiolabs.ca and bcaxiompeptide.com, after tests revealed dangerous bacterial contamination.
These unauthorized products, including Human Chorionic Gonadotropin and Tirzepatide, were imported from Chinese-based wholesaler Shanghai ERP Peptide Biotechnology Ltd. and were never assessed for safety, efficacy, or quality by Health Canada.
Tests on more than 11,400 vials revealed bacteria capable of causing serious infections, including life-threatening sepsis. Health Canada identified three different harmful bacteria during testing of the contaminated products.
If you have used these unauthorized peptides, Health Canada advises seeking immediate medical attention for symptoms including fever, swelling, or pain at the injection site. The agency is encouraging consumers to stop buying these products.
Authorized prescription drugs in Canada display an eight-digit Drug Identification Number on the label, providing a standard of safety and quality that unauthorized products lack. Injectable peptides are typically considered prescription drugs requiring supervision.
