Chancellor John Healey Sets Out Plan for ‘New Age of Industrialisation’
Healey said the plan would channel £100 million to apprenticeships and bring £300 million from Rolls-Royce into British factories.
On Monday, Chancellor John Healey pledged to use Rotherham's Advanced Manufacturing Park as a blueprint for reindustrializing Britain during his Labour Party Conference speech in Liverpool.
Healey, whose politics were shaped by South Yorkshire's industrial heartlands, described the former Orgreave colliery site as a hub of innovation hosting Rolls-Royce, McLaren, and Boeing.
Rolls-Royce will invest £300 million in factories across Derby, Bristol, Glasgow, and Rotherham, while Healey confirmed previously trailed plans for £6 billion in government contracts for British shipyards.
Mayors will receive a £100 million fund to boost apprenticeships, described by Healey as a "down payment" on efforts by former cabinet minister Alan Milburn to address youth unemployment.
Reforming the welfare system to return people to work is an "economic must" and a "moral duty," Healey said, emphasizing The Government's commitment to growth driving better wages and lives.
