Healey pledges cheaper marmalade and gherkins in pre-Budget package of 'everyday fixes'
The package includes tariff cuts on more than 100 goods and new support for drivers, carers and self-employed fathers.
- Ahead of Wednesday's Budget, Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Chancellor John Healey announced five "everyday fixes" covering work-related travel, food prices, parental pay, and carer support to ease financial pressures on families and businesses.
- Conflict in the Middle East and Europe is driving higher everyday costs, Healey said, though the Government cannot control global events but can act where it makes a difference.
- The Treasury will lock in a 55p mileage rate for the first 10,000 miles, with rates above that rising to 35p. Tariffs on more than 100 products will be scrapped, saving households around £21 annually.
- Ministers plan to extend parental pay to more than 150,000 parents annually, while the Government replaces the Carers' Allowance cliff edge with a taper reducing the benefit by £1 for every £1 earned above the limit.
- The Budget will deliver a £432 million boost to help homeless people by Christmas, with Burnham saying he wants "every single person" receiving an offer of help. The Government is also rolling out extra Post Office drop boxes to reduce parcel queues.
