Nobel Peace Laureate Defends International Justice as US Leaders Criticize It
The former judge defended the rule of law after the committee cited her work on Gaza and international courts.
On Monday, South African-born jurist Navi Pillay confirmed receiving written notification of her Nobel Peace Prize, awarded last week for promoting international law at a time when the system faces attack.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee honored the 85-year-old for her career defending human rights, including chairing a commission that concluded Israel was responsible for genocide in Gaza.
Pillay's recognition serves as a rebuke to President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who have both criticized the International Criminal Court and International Court.
Responding to recent hostility, Pillay called Washington's attacks on the International Criminal Court "completely unlawful" as well as "negative and cruel," urging global defense of legal institutions.
Marking the 125th anniversary of the prize, the jurist emphasized that peace requires justice, calling for "collective action, not just words" from nations to uphold the rule of law.
Navi Pillay, the South African jurist who received the Nobel Peace Prize last week, told The Associated Press on Monday that, as a judge, she had to review the evidence of her triumph before she could believe the news.
Winner of the Nobel Peace Prize-2026 Navanetham (Navi) Pillay spoke sharply to US President Donald
Trump, who has been dreaming of receiving this award for many years.
