Southgate Has Not Been to Football Match in 18 Months
The former England manager says he has not visited a football stadium in nearly 18 months and has focused on other work since leaving the role.
- Former England manager Gareth Southgate ruled out returning to Premier League management on Thursday, telling The Amol Rajan Connection podcast: "I don't see a scenario where I do that."
- Southgate led England for eight years, reaching two European Championship finals in 2020 and 2024 before resigning after the Euro 2024 loss to Spain. By the end, he admitted the wins no longer kept him going.
- Since his three-year Middlesbrough spell ending in 2009, Southgate has avoided football stadiums for nearly 18 months, visiting only Crystal Palace's 2025 FA Cup final win. He has since worked in media and as a Harvard Business School lecturer.
- Reflecting on his career shift, Southgate explained: "I've had 37 years where my sense of self depended on, 'did I win or lose on Saturday?'" He said he now enjoys different experiences across industries and travel.
- Addressing Manchester City's guilty verdict on over 100 Premier League charges, Southgate said: "My underlying thought is none of this is good for football and there are no winners," citing uncertainty over legal consequences.
