On 23 July 1952, his father, Farouk, was forced to abdicate following a military coup d'état orchestrated by Gamal Abdel Nasser. The baby Fouad was then proclaimed king, at only six months away. But this monarchy lasted only one year: the Republic was proclaimed in 1953 and the child king was exiled.
