Hockey Legend Hayley Wickenheiser Parts Ways with Maple Leafs After Eight Seasons
Wickenheiser said discussions with new general manager John Chayka led her to step away rather than take a reduced role.
On Thursday, July 9, 2026, Dr. Hayley Wickenheiser announced she is leaving the Toronto Maple Leafs front office after eight seasons with the organization.
Wickenheiser said the move followed "several discussions" with new general manager John Chayka, after his leadership group "envisioned a different path" for her role.
Joining in 2018, the hockey legend served as assistant general manager since 2022, following a 23-year career with Team Canada that included four Olympic Gold Medals.
Departures follow widespread changes implemented by Chayka, who has been restructuring the front office after succeeding previous GMs Kyle Dubas and Brad Treliving.
Although Wickenheiser is a medical doctor with an "amazing career to fall back on," her future plans within the NHL remain currently unconfirmed.
