Man Extradited After $100k Scam Targeting Elderly Women
Police say the alleged group targeted elderly shoppers and used stolen bank cards for fraudulent transactions after more than 40 reports.
- On Saturday, Vasile Bombonel appeared in Bail Court after being extradited from Perth to NSW. NSW Police charged the 38-year-old with nine counts of dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception.
- Investigators allege the group targeted elderly shoppers by claiming they dropped cash or wallets. When victims checked their belongings, a second person stole their bank cards, resulting in more than $100,000 in fraudulent transactions across nearly 40 reported incidents.
- Strike Force Danube coordinated with Australian Federal Police and Western Australia Police to arrest the suspect on Wednesday at Perth Airport. The investigation spanned from the South Coast to Grafton and Sydney between February 11 and March 23.
- Bombonel was transported to Mascot Police Station following his arrest at Perth Airport. Additional charges include six counts of stealing items valued at $2000 or less, two counts of larceny, and charges involving amounts between $2000 and $5000.
- Investigations remain active under Strike Force Danube as police continue probing the organized operation. Authorities previously arrested two Romanian nationals in January for a separate $50,000 scam targeting elderly drivers in shopping-centre car parks.
