Hardeep Singh Puri set to enter Rajya Sabha unopposed after RO rejects objections
The BJP nominee is poised to win after the Returning Officer found no defect in his papers and rejected two rival nominations.
On Tuesday, Returning Officer Umesh Sharma rejected the nominations of Congress-backed Rajkumar Lohani and Kante Sayanna, clearing the path for Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri to win the Madhya Pradesh Rajya Sabha by-election unopposed.
Madhya Pradesh Congress MLA Hemant Katare had challenged Puri's nomination, citing discrepancies in the affidavit regarding his wife's assets and foreign property, echoing concerns from a rejected nomination in the June 9, 2026, biennial election.
Returning Officer Umesh Sharma dismissed these objections, stating in his order that "no defect was found in Puri's papers," while the affidavit disclosed movable assets worth Rs 6.54 crore and immovable assets valued at Rs 20 crore.
Reacting to the ruling, Katare and Congress MLA Atif Aqeel declared the decision "an attack on Indian democracy," and the party announced plans to challenge the ruling in court, accusing officials of ignoring errors.
Triggered by Union Minister L. Murugan's resignation to strengthen the Bharatiya Janata Party in Tamil Nadu, the by-election is scheduled for November 12; candidates have until November 5 to withdraw, though Puri now faces no remaining opposition.
RS bypoll from MP: Hardeep Singh Puri is considered certain to win the Madhya Pradesh Rajya Sabha by-election. The nominations of two independent candidates, including Congress-backed Rajkumar Lohani, have been rejected, and the Congress will approach the court.
