- In 2005, Happy demonstrated self-awareness by recognizing herself in a mirror, a rare cognitive trait, and keepers said she eagerly engaged with favorite treats like watermelon or strawberries, said Keith Lovett, the zoo's director of animal programs.
- The Nonhuman Rights Project sued the Bronx Zoo in 2018, seeking to have Happy declared a "person" for legal purposes; New York's top court rejected the activists' claim by a 5-2 majority.
- Following Happy's death, 57-year-old Patty remains the zoo's last elephant in the United States' largest city; interim director Craig Piper said the zoo will be "really thoughtful and careful" regarding her future, as the Wildlife Conservation Society stopped acquiring pachyderms 20 years ago.
