Handcuffed suspect allegedly slips restraints, steals Dallas police cruiser with officer trapped in back seat

Police said the suspect slipped free of handcuffs, drove about 1,000 feet at 50 mph and jumped from the moving patrol car.

  • On Saturday, May 30, 37-year-old Stacey Huffman seized a Dallas police patrol car on the R.L. Thornton Freeway, driving roughly 1,000 feet at 50 mph before jumping from the moving vehicle.
  • Officers Ibrahim Kante and Kenneth Harper arrested Huffman in the 2300 block of South Marsalis Avenue earlier that evening; he later slipped his handcuffs and climbed into the driver's seat while both officers were outside the vehicle.
  • Inside the moving vehicle, Officer Kenneth Harper deployed his Taser, which proved ineffective when Huffman pulled the wires away; Harper then struck Huffman with his duty weapon as the vehicle swerved toward Beckley Avenue.
  • Following the incident, both individuals were hospitalized; the officer was released with minor injuries, while Huffman remains hospitalized and faces charges including escape from custody and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
  • On Thursday, June 4, the Dallas Police Department released body and dash camera footage as Huffman's family expressed concern about his condition, stating they have been unable to visit him in the hospital.
