Lewis Hamilton Calls Out FIA Announcement Which 'Makes No Sense'
The FIA said the cut avoids costly chassis redesigns as engine rules raise fuel use, while Hamilton says shorter races make no sense.
Earlier this week, the FIA announced that Formula 1 race distances will shrink from 305 km to 290 km for the 2027 season, reducing most grands prix by 15km depending on circuit length.
New engine regulations shifting to a 58-42 power split for 2027 require higher fuel consumption, prompting the FIA to shorten races rather than force teams into costly chassis redesigns for larger fuel tanks.
Lewis Hamilton criticized the plan during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, stating the decision "makes absolutely no sense to me" and arguing races should be longer.
Hamilton argued that races are physically easier than ever, citing C3, 4, 5 tyre compounds that allow longer stints and contradict the sport's goal of remaining maximally demanding.
Other drivers offered mixed reactions; Russell joked about shorter race times, while Fernando Alonso suggested circuits have been "killed" by ongoing rule changes.
