"You can't understand Amsterdam without knowledge of Suriname," said Mayor Femke Halsema at the official opening of the Suriname Museum in the capital. "Our entire city center bears witness to our colonial history and the slavery that the city of Amsterdam and many city officials were responsible for for centuries."
