After the Supreme Court cleared the way for the Trump administration to end Temporary Protected Status for Haitians, more than 350,000 are expected to lose their legal authorization to live and work in the U.S. on July 24, leaving them vulnerable to detention and deportation if they do not have another lawful immigration status. Advocates say now is the time to prepare.
Haitian deportations threaten Springfield's workforce
TPS protections should be restored for Haitian refugees. Haitians currently make up a quarter of the population of Springfield, Ohio, and their work is important to the local economy. Moreover, Haiti continues to be as dangerous as it was a decade ago. Deporting Haitians would hurt innocent families and Ohio, and it would decimate Springfield.
