Powerful Haitian gang leader writes UN seeking dialogue as clashes intensify
Wilson Joseph asked the United Nations for dialogue and mediation as more than 2,000 Salvadoran troops were deployed after an attack on missing technicians.
- On Monday, Wilson Joseph, leader of the 400 Mawozo gang, wrote to the U.N. Secretary General requesting the organization deploy a delegation to Haiti for dialogue and mediation amid escalating violence.
- Joseph expressed concern that Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele's deployment of more than 2,000 troops could escalate violence and trigger "a logic of reprisals, of which the Haitian people would be the first victims."
- The letter, sent from Plaine du Cul-de-Sac, describes 400 Mawozo as a "rebel group" and states Joseph has "officially raised the white flag" since Aug. 20, seeking a peaceful solution.
- More than 5,700 people have been killed or injured across Haiti this year as Clashes intensify between a suppression force and armed groups, with Vectus Global, the firm founded by former Navy SEAL and Blackwater founder Erik Prince, engaged in operations.
- While Joseph remains "officially available" to participate in dialogue and pursue a peaceful solution, the U.S. government has issued a $1 million reward for his arrest on hostage-taking charges.
