Cleveland Comes up Short in ALCS, Extending World Series Title Drought to 78 Years
The Guardians were held to three runs in Game 6 as Tampa Bay closed out the series and ended Cleveland’s bid for its first title since 1948.
The Cleveland Guardians' season ended Monday with a 7-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series, extending the franchise's World Series title drought to 78 years.
Seemingly in control after winning two of the first three games, the Guardians lost three consecutive contests as the Rays utilized superior pitching and late-series offense to eliminate them from the ALCS.
Tampa Bay's pitching staff kept the Guardians at arm's length Monday, while manager Stephen Vogt used eight relievers; Junior Caminero hit a two-run homer in the seventh to give the Rays a 5-1 lead.
"Yeah, let it hurt," manager Stephen Vogt told his club after the defeat. Catcher Austin Hedges said, "I felt like this was a group that could win the World Series."
The Rays will face the Milwaukee Brewers in the World Series, the first matchup since 1980 between teams seeking their first title, while Cleveland plans to build for the 2027 season.
