Guardian angels serve home-cooked meals to Campbell River’s less fortunate
The volunteer group serves up to 90 meals a night and hands out clothing and toiletries after the loss of a former soup kitchen.
Following the demolition of the Harbourside Inn, volunteer Barb Lippke is filling a vital service gap in Campbell River by leading volunteers to deliver warm meals to the city's unhoused population.
Lippke estimates roughly 174 unhoused persons in Campbell River, where existing shelter spaces like The Evergreen remain severely limited with only 22 beds available.
Operating solely on community donations, Lippke and volunteers serve 50 to 90 meals nightly directly from their vehicles at Spirit Square, with no government funding supporting their efforts.
Lippke describes the volunteer work as 'very raw' and 'authentic,' noting she has encountered no issues with clients while dismissing stereotypes that all unhoused people struggle with addiction.
With Campbell River lacking a permanent cooling or warming center, Lippke coordinates efforts for critical winter supplies including socks, mitts, toques, and jackets to help people survive outdoors.
