SpaceX signs deal with Qualcomm to provide network technology for U.S. mobile service
SpaceX will use Qualcomm’s Dragonwing technology to expand Starlink Mobile, with rollout planned to begin next year, the companies said.
On Wednesday, SpaceX announced a partnership with Qualcomm to supply network infrastructure for Starlink Mobile, aiming to create a nationwide wireless carrier challenging Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile.
Qualcomm will furnish Dragonwing radio and processing units to support tens of thousands of cell sites, creating a terrestrial network designed to "complement Starlink's satellite capabilities."
SpaceX holds less than 80 MHz of spectrum capacity compared to 300 to 400 MHz held by major carriers, necessitating the EchoStar spectrum acquisition to bridge this critical gap.
Qualcomm EVP Durga Malladi called the agreement the company's biggest 5G network deal, while SpaceX prepares a massive satellite upgrade with thousands of more powerful Starlink satellites.
Reports suggest SpaceX may pursue 80,000 cell towers, approaching the scale of AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, though the company has not yet announced specific tower partnerships.
