Security Guard Killed in Attack on Former AJK PM Tanveer Ilyas's Convoy in Poonch District
Officials said the guard died after shielding Ilyas, and the former premier accused a banned group of carrying out the attack.
- On Friday, the convoy of former Azad Jammu and Kashmir Prime Minister Sardar Tanveer Ilyas came under fire in Poonch, killing his security guard, Muhammad Asif, near the Tain-Dhalkot bridge.
- Despite warnings from administration officials about the prevailing law-and-order situation, Ilyas insisted on visiting his native constituency, LA-22, to attend meetings and offer condolences. Officials informed him he would have to proceed "at his own risk."
- Unidentified assailants opened fire from the mountainside at 1:30pm about one-and-a-half kilometres beyond the Tain-Dhalkot bridge. Muhammad Asif, a retired commando from Sudhnoti, was fatally struck while reportedly shielding the former premier.
- Ilyas alleged that members of the banned Joint Awami Action Committee carried out the attack. He labeled the assailants "terrorists" and urged authorities to deal with them "with an iron hand."
- The former premier further warned that "stones will be answered with stones and bricks with bricks" and alleged the perpetrators were pursuing "RAW's agenda" in the state, referring to India's intelligence agency.
