GTA 6 reveal was the most-streamed 'movie' on all of Netflix last week, top title in 58 countries
From August 27 through August 31, Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look attracted 31.1 million views on Netflix, topping the streaming service's weekly English-language film rankings and surpassing The Whisper Man, a crime thriller with 23 million views.
Reaching the top spot in 87 of the 93 countries tracked globally, the GTA 6 trailer resonated worldwide despite Netflix holding exclusive rights for only six hours before release on other platforms.
Developer Rockstar Games published the 27-minute footage on YouTube six hours after Netflix's debut, garnering 17.4 million views. Netflix and YouTube calculate views differently; Netflix divides total hours watched by runtime.
Market research firm M Science estimates the trailer release drove a surge of a few hundred thousand pre-orders, adding to the roughly 4 million units already sold prior to the extended look's debut.
This marks a comeback for the franchise after a 13-year hiatus. Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on November 19, arriving exclusively on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S platforms.
GTA VI will undoubtedly have a huge impact on global pop culture. Unfortunately, this stigma may be a curse for years to come, perpetuating the appalling treatment of game development workers and numerous controversial corporate practices.
