Group of undocumented migrants arrested in Quebec’s Montérégie
Nineteen Haitian asylum seekers were arrested after illegally crossing from the US, with six treated for frostbite, and one man charged for attempting to pick up migrants.
- On Thursday night, nineteen asylum seekers of Haitian origin were arrested in the Havelock area of Montérégie after allegedly crossing from the United States into Canada.
- The United States Border Patrol alerted the RCMP shortly before 6 p.m., and officers from the Champlain and Valleyfield teams found 15 people around 7 p.m., continuing searches until about 10:30 p.m. in extreme cold.
- The group included people aged from one to 60, and eight people were transported to hospital with six treated for frostbite while two young children were taken as a precaution.
- All intercepted people requested asylum and were transferred to the Canada Border Services Agency, while police arrested one man under Section 117 of the Customs Act and seized his vehicle as the investigation remains ongoing.
- On Christmas evening, the RCMP warned it is extremely dangerous to attempt illegal border crossings in winter amid extreme cold that prolonged searches.
