Swimming World Record Lasts Just Nine Days as Gretchen Walsh Breaks 50 Freestyle Mark in Rome
Walsh broke the mark by 0.04 seconds, and Sarah Sjostrom finished second in 23.86.
On Sunday, American swimmer Gretchen Walsh set a world record in the 50-meter freestyle at the Sette Colli meet in Rome, clocking 23.55 seconds.
The record-breaking swim came nine days after training partner Kate Douglass set the mark in Indianapolis, as both remain University of Virginia teammates.
Walsh, who won two relay gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, also holds the 100 butterfly long-course record; Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom finished second in 23.86.
After seeing her mark bested, Douglass posted a photo of Walsh on Instagram with the text "Was fun while it lasted" and a handshake emoji.
Following the 2024 Paris Olympics, elite competition at the Sette Colli meet continues to showcase the intense rivalry defining American sprint swimming at the highest level.
