Grenfell Tower 9 Years on - Remembering the 72 People Who Lost Their Lives
Families and survivors marked the ninth anniversary with a church service and silent walk as police said up to 20 companies and 57 people could face charges.
On Sunday, bereaved families and survivors marked the ninth anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire with a silent walk, noting it is "the last anniversary with any part of Grenfell Tower remaining."
A public inquiry determined the 2017 fire was avoidable, citing "decades of failure" by governments and the building industry, while condemning the "systematic dishonesty" of firms that sold combustible cladding.
Police and prosecutors announced last month that up to 20 companies and 57 individuals could face criminal charges, with the Metropolitan Police investigation examining 165 million electronic files and 14,400 witness statements.
Survivors described the ongoing wait for accountability as "tortuous," with campaigner Edward Daffarn stating "justice delayed is justice denied," though he noted the timeline for prosecutions is "encouraging."
Demolition of the tower began in September 2025 and is expected to take two years, while the Grenfell Tower Memorial Commission and design team Freehaus are planning a permanent "sacred space.
