Great-Grandmother Gets UK-First Cancer Treatment on Tumour Deemed Untreatable
Brenda Iveson, 92-year-old great-grandmother from Harrogate in North Yorkshire, became the first person to receive robotic-guided electrochemotherapy at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, targeting her inoperable six-centimetre liver tumour.
Following her diagnosis in late 2025, Mrs Iveson had been told "nothing could be done" due to her frailty and tumour location, as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy were deemed ineffective.
Clinicians used robotic needle guidance to precisely position needles around the tumour under the direction of Professor Tze Min Wah at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, ensuring accurate placement in complex areas.
Now Mrs Iveson's tumour has shrunk by around 80 per cent according to current scans, and medics report she remains in stable condition while feeling well.
Leeds Teaching Hospitals is currently the only centre delivering this treatment as part of a European research study assessing safety and efficacy, offering hope for future patients with limited options.
