Graves of 20 NZ soldiers killed in WWI and WWII bulldozed by IDF at Gaza cemetery

Australia commits to restoring graves of over 250 servicemen damaged during Israeli operations, with repair efforts pending safety and costing millions, Commonwealth War Graves Commission said.

  • Over the past year, satellite images show IDF bulldozed part of Gaza War Cemetery in al‑Tuffah, damaging more than 3,600 graves including over 250 Australian servicemen.
  • The IDF argued it took defensive measures after fighters attacked troops and used nearby structures, adding that underground infrastructure was identified and dismantled around the cemetery.
  • Satellite imagery shows rows of headstones removed, topsoil churned, and an earth berm cut across sections, while Essam Jaradah described bulldozing 12 metres outside and nearly 1,000 square metres inside the cemetery creating sand mounds.
  • The Commonwealth War Graves Commission said it was deeply concerned and warned it cannot protect the sites while conflict continues; Australia pledged to restore damaged graves and called the damage significant.
  • Human rights organisations note 39 of 62 cemeteries were destroyed and 19 damaged, with reconstruction estimates last year at $9.8 million and $1.6 million for Deir El Balah.
