Turkey’s Interior Minister Vows to ‘Liberate’ Jerusalem, Return It to Turkish Hands
On Saturday, Turkish Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci vowed that Turkey would "one day" take control of Jerusalem, likening the city's future to the "liberation" of Damascus, Aleppo, and Karabakh.
At a ruling AKP Party conference in Corum, Ciftci recalled praying for the "privilege of serving" as governor of Jerusalem, believing "those lands will be ours once again."
Israel Foreign Ministry issued a sharp rebuke on Sunday, telling the minister to "wake up and smell the coffee" because the "corrupt Ottoman Empire is gone."
Defense Minister Israel Katz joined the criticism, stating Jerusalem has been the capital of the Jewish people for 3,000 years and warning Israel is not a "crumbling Crusader Empire."
These remarks emerge amid significantly deteriorated diplomatic ties since the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attack, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan frequently criticizing Israeli policies and leadership.
