Ringleader of $30M grandparent scam network preying on unsuspecting seniors finally arrested
The ringleader of a $30-million-dollar scam network that preyed on seniors across a staggering 46 states has finally been arrested and now faces decades in prison for the alleged fraud.
An RCMP spokesman confirmed the arrest of Gareth West at CBC. Investigators suspect him of having committed grandparent-type fraud.
A Montrealer suspected of running a network of grandparent fraudsters who reportedly killed more than 600 people in the United States was arrested early in the afternoon on Friday, La Presse learned. Gareth West was wanted since March for frauds totalling 30 million.

Gareth West, 38, led a $30 million scam targeting seniors across 46 U.S. states with accomplices from Canada. Investigations by U.S. and Canadian authorities began in 2022. A federal grand jury indicted the group on February 20, 2025. Most were arrested, but West evaded capture until July 4, 2025.
