Judge overturns conviction for sitcom writer Linehan over damaging transgender activist’s phone
Court hears Linehan said he was proud after snatching and damaging a trans activist’s phone, as judges review his criminal damage conviction.
- On Friday, Mrs Justice Amanda Tipples overturned the criminal damage conviction of Father Ted co-creator Graham Linehan following an appeal hearing at Southwark Crown Court involving transgender activist Sophia Brooks.
- The original conviction stemmed from an October 19, 2024, incident outside the Battle of Ideas conference in Westminster, where Linehan allegedly snatched and threw Brooks's mobile phone during a confrontation.
- During Thursday's hearing, Prosecutor Julia Faure Walker argued Linehan sought "personal superiority," while defense lawyer Sarah Vine claimed Brooks was "determined" to see Linehan convicted as part of a "campaign."
- The judge, assisted by two magistrates, stated, "Having considered all the evidence before us, we cannot be sure that the damage to the complainant's phone was caused by Mr Linehan," finding him not guilty.
- Last November, District Judge Briony Clarke cleared Linehan of separate harassment charges involving social media posts about Brooks, ruling they did not amount to "oppressive" conduct.
