CASS COUNTY, MINNESOTA, AUG 10 – The 41-year-old man likely drowned after exiting to fix a motor without a life vest as the boat drifted in high winds, officials said.
- A 41-year-old man from Grafton exited a pontoon on Cass Lake to fix a boat motor but did not resurface on Saturday, August 9.
- While the boat started drifting in strong winds, juveniles onboard tried to provide the man with a life jacket before other boaters intercepted the vessel and alerted emergency services.
- A variety of responders, including local fire and ambulance services, tribal law enforcement, conservation officers, U.S. Forest Service personnel, dive teams, and nearby boaters, promptly arrived to conduct a search of the area.
- Around 7:51 p.m., authorities recovered the man from the lake while he was not wearing a life vest; his identity is being withheld until family members are notified, and an autopsy has been planned.
