Centre prepares for Rs 41,000 crore international transhipment port at Great Nicobar Island

The first phase is targeted for completion in 2028 at a handling capacity of 4 million Twenty Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs). A TEU is an approximate unit of measure used for cargo containers. The capacity of the port will increase to 16 Million TEUs in the ultimate stage of development.

Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has invited expressions of interest (EOI) from interested parties for the construction of a Rs 41,000 crore international transhipment port project at Great Nicobar Island in the Bay of Bengal. In a release, the ministry said that the USD 5 billion port project will be completed with an investment from the government as well as PPP concessionaire.

Expressions of Interests (EoIs) will be invited by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways to develop an international transhipment port project at Great Nicobar Island in the Bay of Bengal.
